The Buddha is depicted in many different poses, usually expressing joy and compassion or in a serene, meditative state. Buddha taught that the true nature of all sentient beings is full of compassion, loving kindness and serenity. The negative emotions, and even some of the positive emotions we experience are a result of confusion we have about what the true nature of reality is. That confusion is sometimes referred to 'defilements' but that word suggests negative, judgmental qualities that aren't a part of our basic natures. Statues and paintings of the Buddha are used as meditation aids, and depending on what particular practice you are doing, you might use a happy Buddha or a serene one to help remind you of the gist of the teaching you are working on.
