Why are some Canary Palms short and fat and others tall and not so chubby?

Canary Island Palms are a slow growing plant that can be trimmed in a variety of ways. When you see those short, fat little palms, it means that it's a young plant that hasn't really grown much of it's trunk in yet. Though it may appear to have a very robust trunk, you're really just seeing the results of a fine trimming job. The leaves on the bottom and sides are cut away, leaving just the ones on top, resulting in the pineapple look. These plants grow for many, many years and can reach heights of around fifty feet, but most tend to grow up in the vicinity of 25-30 feet high. Of course, the trunk at this point is well grown in, giving the tree that slender appearance.
