Maybe it has something to do with the way they were brought up. It's definetely a combination of nature and nurture. Some people have had harder lives than others, but it''s also down to the combination of your genes.

First I'd recommend you take a break and give yourself a little room. I know ( I was 17 once too) that getting meaner in the short term may seem like a good idea but don't get meaner and more assertive confused. In adult life no one likes or respects a truly mean person. People do however admire people that carry themselves with confidence and authority.
