I would guess that the law of supply and demand has a lot to do with this. In other words, as long as enough people are willing to do a certain work for a low salary, there is really no inentive to increase the salary.
Unfortunately this is a very common practice all over the USA. Some will argue the fact that teachers are not really underpaid, just their first year is a low income. Once teachers reach the college level their salary increases dramatically.
It depends mostly on where they are at as to how much they get paid. And one thing people seem to forget is that they work 9 months of the year and most spread the pay out over 12 months.
It would depeng on what kind of degree/teaching credentials you have and if that is the equivalent of what is required in the US.
