Some causes to why we teens become so emotional is family, friends, or boyfriends/girlfriends. We always disagree with our parents because some parents blame them for everything. Other parents say the world revolves around us. Well we see the world differently and not the same way as parents. We always say, oh i wish they understood. Because parents never do. Also, most all teenagers only want to hang out with their friends or boyfriend/girlfriend.

Saying it is just 'hormones' is a harsh simplification of this. It actually isn't hormones at all. It has to do with the difference in structure and uses of the brain between teens and adults. Teens primarily use a more 'primitive' part of the brain to navigate their experiences. This is known as the amygdala. It is related to rash actions and decisions and for an instant response in an adult brain. Adults use mostly the frontal cortex of that brain to establish perception and navigate the world around them. As a teen's brain fully matures that neural activity begins to switch form the amygdala to the frontal cortex .

  • Puberty can be a rough trip on many teenagers. Their hormones are raging, but they are not wise enough to know what it is all about. They expect to be a man or woman, yet they are still children at heart. Mid teens the parents often expect their children to act 'mature' when they still are not adult men or women, yet often treat them as children. Sex is generally on the agenda and some teens have mixed feelings as to whether they should have a sexual relationship; some have no idea what they are doing and it can be frustrating for them; some believe masturbation is a sin when it is not; others feel they should have sex because they feel within themselves they are mature enough to handle it when often they do not. Teen pregnancy is at an all time high. It can be an extremely challenging time for teens. Some teens (especially girls) feel they are not loved enough and some want to have a baby, but do not have a clue the hard work it takes to raise a child because the teen is still a child themselves. Teens also have peer pressures to act as the rest of their group of friends regarding dating and sex and some teens feel abnormal if they feel they are not ready to date or have a sexual relationship and often feel alone and that something is wrong with them. Teens also can be bullied for several reasons; called names; cyber bullied; physically attacked which leaves the teen feeling depressed; fearful and a deep loneliness and no hope of fitting in anywhere with their peers. Some teens may not be considered 'one of the beautiful people' leaving them to feel left out; too fat; ugly when they are not. Depression is very high in teens because of the hormonal changes and they don't feel they can discuss the problems with their parents and may be fearful of trusting a friend about their private feelings for fear there will be gossip and their secret is out. Most teens manage to get through these hurdles of life and leave any disappointments they may have encountered behind them, but a few teens may carry the stigmatism of anyone of the above throughout their lives.
