They are definitely really rich in literature and English, but perhaps not necessarily "important" per se. If you like old well-written books then they are the books for you. But I think they mostly read just for enjoyment--you know as a fun passtime to read in your spare time. Trust me--they're good. I've read each one thrice over!! So there you have it in a nutshell--they are good books and I HIGHLY recommend them if you like that sort of literature, but I wouldn't label them a neccessity...unless you're just like me......
