It sends a power to the starter relay/solenoid to engauge the starter. Know that the ignition switch is not what you put the key in and turn. That is the lock assembly. The ignition switch is located lower down on the steering column.
Did you try just turning the ignition key ON but not starting and looking at your dash lights? Usually the dash will light up all lights as a sort of check system.
You may have a bad ignition pig tail. It is in the steering column behind the ignition switch.

I have been researching for a fix to get my dash lights working again and have come across your problem and the fix seems to be that you have to change the ignition switch which is a wire harness under the steering colum attached bellow the key cylinder. If you look up jimmy ignition switch you will find the info you need.
This could be the starter, or the ignition switch.
you need a new ignition tumbler.
change the Ignition Lock lock switch
take the serial # off the dash of your car to the dealer.
You usually can suspect that the starter is bad if you turn the ignition key and nothing happens. You hear a clicking sound but the engine does not turn over. The dash lights should come on.
