It depends on the year, make and model of the locks. Grinding usually indicates that there is tension on the lock. If the lock hasn't been used in a long time you might want to lubricate it. Also look at the lock to see if it has been damaged from someone trying to break in. If this has gotten worse then it could be linkage has come undone or broken.
The expedition door lock relay could be stuck causing the grinding noise. Check to insure that the lock relay is working properly.
How do door locks work?
Because the car alarm needs to be disarmed before you open the door. It's not connected to your door locks.

I have a 2001 Nissan quest, recently my door locks are malfunction, when I pull the door in it locks, when key in ignition it locks, what cause this problem?
We have a 2000 Montana and yes it does have automatic door locks.
A more or less permanent (though difficult) solution might be to remove the door panels and disconnect the lock actuator wire connectors on the offending locks. Though if you have the door open, you might want to fix the locks instead. If the motors keep running but otherwise work OK, the solution might be to check and clean the limit switches. Alternatively, you might need to replace the door lock actuators. For a quick way to silence the locks, you can pull fuse #24, which will disable all the power door locks, as well as the power seats, the rear defogger, and the remote keyless entry system.
Remove the relay or fuse for the door locks.
Tumbler door locks work with the key being put in the lock and tumbler turning. This is one of the most common types of door locks.
I'm having the same problem. Relays working fine and door locks have some movement, but do not lock or unlock all the way. Hope we find out the problem.
