They provide the ritual obligations that need to be followed.

The 5 pillars of Islam are called pillars because they are the moral support upon which Islam is based. They are the building blocks of Islamic beliefs; without fulfilling them, one isn't a Muslim.

These pillars are the shahada (declaration of faith), prayer, charity, fasting, and Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca).

They are important because they are in the Qur'an.

And Allah sent them down in the Qur'an

These are the basic things that Allah has told us to follow, and if we stick to them, then we are the basic Muslim, there are also other things like Doing good deeds etc.

The five pillars are important to Muslims because clear denial of any one of these pillars turns a follower out of the fold of Islam. Thus for a true Muslim all these pillars are equally important.

They are the basis of Islamic belief. The 5 Islam pillars are like the pillars of a building. As no building can stand without pillars, also Islam does not stand without the five pillars, namely:

1. Shahadah: to testify that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad is his messenger and prophet.

2. Salah: To pray five daily prayers on the right time.

3. Zakah: To pay 2.5% of your money if it reached a certain amount (around the value of 83 grams of gold) every hijra lunar year.

4. Fasting the month of Ramadan every year.

5. Pilgrimage to the Holy place Mecca once in the lifetime, for who can afford it physically and financially.

The Islam pillars are the building blocks of Islamic beliefs that denying any of them intentionally by any Muslim expels the Muslim out of Islam.

Simply because they are the pillars, just like pillars to a building, without them the building wont stand. So if a person does not do them, that person is not considered a Muslim.
