there are food groups because;

-different food contain different nutrients

-different food contain desired and specified amounts of the vitamins/nutrients

-in order to classify and organize them like how the animal kingdom is classified

-so people who lack the nutrients of some food can access them and know what to eat (. example: diabetic patients)

-so people who take care of their body or who are weight conscious can know what foods contain what nutrients

The food groups are arranged in order of recommended portion size. For example, fats and sweets occupy the smallest section at the top because they should constitute the smallest part of a healthy diet, while carbohydrates occupy the largest section at the bottom because they should form the backbone of any healthy meal.
