Fuel and temp use the same fuse on many old gm models. It's usually not clearly marked so it takes a service or Chilton's manual to find it. That or power, ground problem.
I've just had the same problem on my 01 Malibu both gages stopped responding, and the ac no longer worked, it's a blown fuse in slot #37 under the hood reason isn't so hard to find is that the manual and fuse diagrams don't mention anything about fuel or temt. Replacing the 10 amp fuse fixes the gages, on the down side if I turn on the ac the fuse blows again. I hope this help you.

Check fuse labeled Gauges.
Try checking your fuses.
It sounds as if you have a defective ignition switch. The next time it happens you need to turn the key slightly. If it starts working then the ignition switch is bad.
i just wanted a picture of the gauges because i have problems with my 2001 Chevy Malibu
check the fuse under gauges
One reason why fuel and temperature gauges would stop working on a 1992 Toyota Corolla would be a short in the wires. This would lead to a blown fuse. Check the fuse and replace it.
