The Great Lakes are important because together they are the largest body of freshwater in the world and they tend to reduce transportation costs in the heartland of North America. The five Great Lakes (Erie, Ontario, Michigan, Huron, and Superior) are located between Canada and the United States. Michigan is the only Great Lake completely enclosed within the United States. All of the Great Lakes are connected naturally, although the connection between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario is Niagara falls. The natural connections have been enhanced by major construction projects including canals and locks. The St. Lawrence Seaway was a joint Canada-United States project that allows oceangoing shipping into the interior of North America. Ships can travel between the Great Lakes. Since transport by ship is much less costly than by rail, road, or air, the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway have allowed industries to save significant amounts in transportation costs. One specific result is that Canada can export wheat from its interior Prairie Provinces. This is one contributing factor to Canada being the second largest exporter of wheat.

The five lakes you are inerested in are the Greta Lakes. Only Lake Michigan is entirely in the US. Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario straddle the US/Canadian border. There is a sixth lake in the group (St. Clair) which is considerably smaller, it is also on the border.

Why are the lakes that lie between us and Canada so important?

The lakes that separate the United States of America and Canada is actually called the "great lakes". There are not these lakes across the whole border of Canada, because most of them are more to the east. If you have noticed, if you put all the great lakes together, they spell "HOME".
