Evolution means change over a period of time. The fact that Earth is roughly 4.5 billion years old has shown us those changes in fossil records, geography, human evolution and carbon dating. So we see Evolution happening over that time and that's what makes it not a theory but fact.

AnswerJust knowing the age of a fossil need not prove that evolution occurred. In fact, the Theory of Evolution would be accepted by scientists even in the absence of fossils. However, knowing the ages of fossils does allow scientists to place fossils in sequence so that they can see the progression, over time, from an earlier species to much later ones. As transitional species are found in the fossil record, they can be shown to fit into the fossil sequence in just the right place to explain evolution.

AnswerThe earth existed billions of years before the very first life forms evolved, so evolution is not at all important to the age of the earth. Of course, the reverse case is different - the age of the earth is important to evolution, since there had to be an earth on which life could evolve.

In itself, it isn't - at least, not directly. The age of the Earth does place constraints on the amount of time in which the current diversity of life could have evolved from its earliest precursors, but that's about the extent of its relevancy. And given the fact that we now know the Earth to be about 4.55 bln years old, and that we know life to have existed for at least 3 bln of those years, one may safely consider it a moot issue.

Knowing the age of the rock the fossil was found in is important because the age of the rock and the age of the fossil are usually about the same.

Because evolution takes a long time and if the earth is not millions of years old then the theory of evolution is a lie
