The QWERTY keyboard layout has its origins in the old mechanical typewriters. The early typewriter manufacturers experimented with many different layouts, indeed some of the first typewriters just had a single row of keys with A to Z all in order. As typists became more proficient and typing speeds increased, jamming of the mechanisms became a large problem. The QWERTY layout was developed to scatter the most-used keys widely across the keyboard thereby reducing the number of jams and allowing typists to type even faster.

Later on, when technology reduced this need, the QWERTY layout survived solely by the sheer number of typists already trained in its use. Other keyboard layouts such as DVORAK have been developed in an effort to find something which is more efficient with modern hardware, but QWERTY is still vastly more common and does not show any signs of going away any time soon.

Because when people used typewriters, the letters used to be in alphabetical order, but the most common letters were not grouped together, so they moved them into logical groups. The most common letters are under the left hand because the typewriter carriage return lever was on the right of the machine.

There is two keyboard layout. There is the QWERTY layout (used almost everywhere) and the AZERTY layout, use mostly in France. The qwerty keyboard was developed to lay out keys so that the most used ones of the English language are easily accessed. Before qwerty keyboards, keys where arranged alphabetically. Then some Frenchman decided to create a new keyboard placing the most used French keys to an easy to access place. This is where the azerty keyboard was created.

When the keyboard was designed, the technology of the typewriter was not advanced enough to keep up with the amazing speed of typists. The typewriters would get jammed because the typists went so fast. So, the "QWERTY" keyboard was designed, to slow down the typing of the typists. Now, the technology has caught up with the speed of typists, but the keyboard has just remained.

They are set up this specific way because a majority of people tend to type too fast and make many grammatical errors when they are together alphabetically.

Why are all the keys on the keyboard all mixed up?

Rumor has it that originally it was set up in such a way that it became easy for people to type quickly. But this jammed the typewriters, so they came up with the mixed up qwerty keyboard. But in fact I'm not super sure.

Why the keyboard is called qwerty keyboard?

The name QWERTY comes from the six letters at the left of the top row of letters on that keyboard (Q, W, E, R, T, and Y). Hence, QWERTY should actually be all in capitals, despite what many people think.

Who was the keyboard named after?

The keyboard was named after Dr. August Dvorak. In 1936, Dr. Dvorak came up with a plan to standardize the letter keys on the keyboard for a typewriter. The nickname for the Dvorak keyboard that is still used today is the QWERTY keyboard because of the placement of the left hand, top line letters.
