Every year heavy summer rain in the Ethiopian highlands sent a torrent of water that caused the Nile to flood. When the floods receded a thick rich mud (black silt) was left and this was excellent soil to plant in. So this area was known as the Black Land and further away from the river was the Red Land, a region of inhospitable desert.

What is the difference between black lands and red lands in Egypt?

The black lands where farming areas around the nile and the red lands are deserts. They call the farming areas black lands beacause the soil when the nile floods (whitch is like a natrual ferilizer for the crops) is black. But, in the desert the sand and soil are a redish color (I am not sure why it is a redish color).
