Because writing is required in order that history be recorded, and without the ability to record in writing there can be no history.

Since the advent of writing occurred after the demise of the mound building culture, we say that culture was prehistoric; the only evidence of its existence is not through writing but in artifacts and remnants of men-made topography changes that have been found in recent times.
