In recent years, the generation that immediately preceded the Baby Boomers has come to be called the "greatest generation." Yes and no. The generation in between WWI and WWII was called the Silent Generation. The Baby Boomers came after because of the returning GI's. The men and women who fought were the Greatest Generation.
Because both at war and on the homefront they were the most dedicated and self sacrificing in the written history of the earth.
The Silent Generation, born between 1925-1945, represents the group of children born during the Great Depression and through World War II. So named because of their apparent silence in culture, media, etc. No spark or vitality like their parents the GI Generation. The Silent Generation fought in the Korean War. Called the Air Raid Generation in Britain because of the regular bombings from Germany during WWII.
James Monroe was the fifth President of the US. He was considered the last of the Revolutionary War generation because he was the last president who was a founding father of the United States.
Tom Brokaw was walking the Normany beach about 30 years ago, and talked to a number of the soldiers who had invaded the Normany beaches 40 years before. He wrote a book called "The Greatest Generation", because these people had grown up during the Great Depression, then fought during the Great War, and then gone home to build the greatest economy the world has ever known.
