== == The Greeks noticed that the planets moved across the skies faster than the stars and proposed that they were Gods, going about on the business of Gods. At the time it was probably just as much whimsy as a real belief that the Gods were driving their chariots across the skies, but as with most religious beliefs, some people will be quite literal. Mercury, the messenger god

Venus, goddess of love

Earth (not named after a god)

Mars, God of War

Jupiter, king of the gods and god of thunder and lightning

Saturn, father of the gods

Uranus, the firstgod. Neptune, god of the sea

Pluto (no longer considered a planet), god of the underworld

It was the Romans who discovered the planets, I guess they just thought it necessary to name these planets after gods and goddesses.

Comment: Five planets (plus Earth) were known long before Roman times.

The other two were not discovered until well after the end of the Roman Empire.
