The International Date Line is a classic example of a NON straight line. This is mainly for political and common sense reasons. The date line should run through a little bit of Russia. It was bent so that all of Russia was in the same day and all of Alaska/Aleutian Islands were in the same day/time. There are other examples in the USA for example which run along state boundaries rather than strict straight lines.
