Otto Lilienthal and others had built motorized airplanes many years before the Wrights did, the problem was the earlier airplanes were uncontrollable and at best could only fly in perfectly straight lines.

What the Wright brothers did that nobody before them did was design a "wing warping" flight control system that permitted controlled powered flight with full maneuverability. They were the first to successfully fly in a horizontal figure eight path.
