Humans spread across the globe and were far enough apart that there was no contact between distant groups. Languages developed in isolated places and spread to regions around there. For example, the European languages are considered to have originated in the Anatolia region of Turkey. We refer to them as "Indo-European" because of their origin. Words with Latin origin are easily found but some words can be traced back to Sanskrit.

Languages are constantly evolving. Shakespeare's works are understandable today but with some effort and study. Chaucer takes considerable study to understand. The English language had dialects back in Britain and has more dialects now that it has spread world-wide.
