An attendant (formally called a "footman") is there to assist the carriage driver in handling the horses from the ground. Carriage drivers should never leave the seat until all passengers are safely out of the carriage, so in an emergency (horses acting up, broken harness parts, etc.), the footman is there to head the horses or otherwise assist in correcting what is wrong.
Outriders are riders on horseback that were traditionally used as scouts, riding ahead of the carriage or wagon to check on road conditions, etc.

The carriage, you know with horses!
A horse that pulls a carriage is usually called a carriage horse. Most carriage horses are draft horses, which are the larger, bigger-boned breeds. They are attached to the carriage by a harness and driving bit and reigns. Carriages and horseback riding used to be the only means of transportation. Now they are mainly used for weddings, funerals, and even special events and memorials. Even today, horses remain a strong part of our history and lives.
