It's all about the energy transferring from the sun, to the plants (grass, for example). Then an herbivore eats the producer (the grass) and thus the energy is once again transferred. Then, a carnivore will take the energy from the herbivore by eating it. Lastly, decomposers feast on the carcass of the carnivore, taking it's energy. Without any of these, the chain would be broken and the entire system offset.
