Sounds like a disconnected wire\ground or a failed sensor. Odometer gets usually get some of its info from the speed sensor located on the Transmission. I would check the connections of this first.
Another possibilityThis symptom (dashes in the odometer) has also been linked to a leaky brake switch.See if fuse #10 in the interior fuse box is blown. If this is the case you should also be having trouble with your odometer will have dashes in it instead of numbers and your ABS light will be on. sesackett@earthlink.net
The dashes indicate the shift points of the transmission under full throttle...
free video instructions go to www.vehix411.com ................turn the power button on, make sure the odometer is on actual mileage2) turn the power off3) hold in the odometer button (in the center of the dash) while pressing the "power" button twice.4) watch the odometer display for dashes that are flashing, after the dashes are gone, the odometer reads 000000.5) release the odometer button the maint. required light will be off now
The speedometer and trip odometer could be in the troubleshooting mode. The A & G pins on the ALDL could be shorted together to get into this mode with the ignition on without starting the engine. When the dashes are there there are no codes present. If the CCM cannot communicate with other onboard computers you would have a ERR displayed. Id say check to see if there is a jumper between the A & G pins left in by a mechanic 1st.
Yes - dashes can be used to set off or emphasize specific information within a sentence. They provide a more abrupt pause than commas, drawing attention to the enclosed text. Just ensure to use them correctly to avoid confusion in your writing.
letters,numbers,dashes.

Start with checking the fuse. Should be fuse #10.If you have other functions that aren't working also, like the odometer showing dashes, radio, or A/C, then your Windstar is leaking brake fluid at the base of the master cylinder.Ford has just issued a recall of all Windstars for this problem. Check with your local Ford dealer for details.See "Related Questions" below for much more about these problems...
This light will come on when after about 4500 miles since last oil change and a reset. It will stay on for a few seconds after you start the engine until you reach 5000 miles, in which it will stay on constantly until reset. To reset the light, insert the key and turn to "ACC". Hold down the odometer button while turning the key to the "ON" position. Continue to hold the button and watch the odometer. Dashes in the odometer window will count down until there are no more dashes in the odometer window.
On the 4.7 liter 2007 Tundra: Put the trip odometer to "A" Trip. Then with key OFF, push trip odometer button and hold it. Turn key to "ON" but do not start the engine. The Odometer should flash a series of dashes. That's it, you are reset.
Make sure the Odometer is NOT in the trip mode. Turn off the ignition, then press the trip button and hold it in. Turn on the ignition. The odometer will turn to all dashes and start to count down and turn to all zeros. When the Odometer returns release the trip button and you are done.
