The US only has a Five Star General (also known as General of the Army) during a time of war. There have been no officers appointed to that rank since Omar Bradley. The rank is still maintained as a rank of the U.S. military, and could again be bestowed during a time of war. There could be non-war conditions which would allow the use of the title. These are under consideration by the U.S. Department of Defense and could include the office of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
No. But as President and Commander in Chief, he commands the US military and all five star Generals there are.
4 star generals are in the US
No six star rank ever existed in the US military.
The answer is one. George C. Marshall as Army Chief of Staff held four stars at the begining of World War II until 1944 when he was promoted to five star rank.If you wanted to know how many generals held four star rank then it would be more. One man commanded the U.S. Army it was Marshall.
Not counting George Washington, (since congress had not created the office of General at that time) there have been a total of five (5) US Army Five-Star Generals. George Marshall (1944) Douglas MacArthur (1944) Dwight D Eisenhower (1944) Henry Arnold (1944) (Although he later became an Air Force General) Omar Bradly (1950) NetRaven
In the US Army, US Air Force, and US Marine Corps: Brigadier General (one star) Major General (two star) Lieutenant General (three star) General (four star) General of the Army (five star) If this is not the specific military force you are looking for, see related link "International Encyclopedia of Uniform Insignia Around the World"
There are no current Generals of the Army (five stars). The rank General of the Army is only used in special circumstances to give the United States a military leader equivalent to the rank of Field Marshal used by some militaries. For further information I urge you to see the Center for Military History page linked to under "links."
Colonels, one-star brigadier generals, two-star major generals, and the only three star lieutenant general, Grant, were all paid the same - $300 per month.
There were approximately twelve four star generals in the US Army during 1945. However, due to damaged records and other mitigating factors, a precise count on the total number of generals, from one star up, is nearly impossible to come by at this time.
Marshell
Yes...im looking at one.
As stated in the United States Code, the number of four star generals has a limit in every department. For the US Army, the maximum is 230, Air force totals to 208, and for the Marine Corps is 60.
