I would assume it is because purple is the color that signifies Jesus' death and therefore used during lent up to Good Friday. That is why purple is used in Mardi Gras celebrations. Therefore, it would not be appropriate to use this color when celebrating the birth of Christ. I'd also think maybe because purple isn't a Christmas colour. Red and green are Christmas colours.
