Why are there so many sand dunes?

Because there is a lot of sand. And there is a lot of sand because there is a lot of erosion in areas -- like deserts and seashores -- that are unprotected by vegetation. Since these sorts of areas also tend to be windy, the sand piles up in dunes. For more information, see the link below the ads.
