Japan lies directly on the edge on a region most geologists call "The Ring of Fire" where most seismic and volcanic activity occur. Earthquakes trigger tsunamis so when there's an enormous earthquake out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Japan usually gets hit, along with Hawaii.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is actually most of the ocean's coasts - the American as well as Asian.

The earthquakes occur below the continental shelves, so off-shore, but not in mid-ocean.

Japan is basically next to the joining of two tectonic plates. Now and then the tectonic plates will move and because it is underwater, it will force a body of water up, hurdling towards or away from Japan.

Japan lays on a large earthquake fault which means they get alot of earthquakes.

Some of which are very strong. Strong earthquakes in the ocean can cause tsunamis. And since Japan gets alot of earthquakes, they will get more tsunamis then normal.

Japan is located near a subduction zone, which is an area when one plate of Earth crust pushes into and slide under another. Tension that builds up in these areas can lead to eathquakes. Vertical moverment of the seafloor associate with these can trigger tsunamis. In addition to the one right off the Japanese Coast, there are several other subduction zones around the Pacific Ocean, several of which can send tsunamis toward Japan.

The tectonic plates move, then there is an earthquake. The earthquake needs to be under the sea floor. This will trigger tsunamis.
