Why are you afraid of being alone?

Because you haven't given yourself a chance to decide what you want to do in life and attain your goals. It doesn't matter if it's art, writing, etc. Perhaps you are not satisfied with your job and should go back to night classes or finish off college (there is no age barrier for this.) You may be shy and find it difficult to make friends. Volunteer for children's camps during the summer (you can meet wonderful people there your own age) join a church group, etc. There are many lonely people out there and they just quite haven't found the right way or the opportunity to express to others what their wants and needs are. The fear of being alone can also be created by 'panic attacks' that, if not treated can lead to Agoraphobia (Greek for 'fear of the market place.') People with this problem need to see their doctor for proper medications and see a counselor to get to the root of their problem and use Cognitive Therapy a good coping skill. Even people that don't suffer from panic attacks or Agoraphobia would be better off taking Cognitive Therapy courses. It balances one's life. As humans whether some say they don't need anyone there is a very low percentage that don't. We either need a man/woman in our life or simply a good friend you can always count on. Some people have dogs or cats for company and they do help. These are some reasons why some people are lonely:

• Being a widow/widower
• Moving to a new town or city or even a new country
• Handicap
• Age. The elderly seem to have more of a challenge meeting either female companionship or male companionship because they can either be set in their ways, aren't use to being in the dating circuit and have no idea how to plunge in or they have a feeling of being cast aside like a piece of garbage. In this case fight back like I do! I may be 65, but I'm not dead, my mind ticks like a Swiss clock and I have worked part-time, go on this board to help others and keep my mind sharp to the best of my ability.
• Being too shy or too quiet (afraid of expressing one's views on a certain subject for fear of sounding unintelligent.)
