Because they are already common and people see them every day.

Zoos are designed to showcase to people the animals that they wouldn't normally get to see or experience.

There are many more human beings than dogs on planet earth. There are nearly 7 billion humans, and less than 1.6 billion dogs. The US has the largest dog population, at 77.5 million dogs, compared to 320 million people.
