Horses usually sleep standing up because in the wild if a predator saw them and tried to hunt them down, they could get running faster if they were standing up rather than having to stand up and then start running. those few seconds could mean life or death to the horse.

Some horses like to ly down and sleep. It's completely fine as long as they're not laying down for an extended period of time. The reason for that is that horses are built differently than humans, and naturally aren't meant to lay down for extended periods of time. When they lay down, all of their organs get squashed together, and laying down too long can cause them to have trouble breathing. Another reason a horse might lay down, is if they have colic. You will know if your horse has colic if they are laying down and biting at their stomach. If this is the case, you need to get the horse to stand up and call a vet right away! Hope this helped :-)

Well this depends on your definition of 'too long' many horses can sleep laying down for longer periods of time than other horses with little to no ill effects. If however the horse is laying down and cannot get back up you should call a equine vet to come out to help the horse immediately. You can try to get the horse up by having someone help you. One person would hold the horses halter or lead rope and the other would try to get the horses legs under it and help it rise. If the horse is unwilling to get up however, do not try to make it do so as it could worsen the situation.

It's not that they can't; they just like to lie down for short periods of times. Each horse is different.

A relaxed horse will lay down and enjoy the warmth of the earth and from the sunshine

Is is dangerous for a horse to lay on its side for a long time?

this depends on what your definition is of a 'long time'. Horses must sleep laying down to get full REM sleep, but this only lasts for a few minutes. Some horses also like to lay on their sides in the sun to rest. However if a horse has been down for an hour or more, or is extremely still while laying down it would be best to check the horse and call a equine veterinarian.

How long can a horse stand?

A horse can stand every day for the rest of his life if he has to with no ill effects except perhaps a shortened life span. Most horse do prefer to lay down every day, as well as roll. And contrary to popular believe, tho a horse can doze standing up, they prefer to lay down to sleep, which averages about 2-3 hours in a 24 hour cycle.

What does it mean when a horse rolls as your riding it?

Well it means you've lost control of the horse and let it lay down on the job and it has decided to roll. Many horses have learned that if they can lay down quickly enough they can roll over and get their rider off their back. Whenever you let your horse stop, if you feel it pawing at the ground make it move forward immediately, to discourage the horse from trying to lay down. Retraining a horse to not do this can take a lot of time.

How many hours can a horse stay in a moving trailer before a rest break?

How long a horse can stay in a trailer is relevant to the condition of the horse, if there is enough room for the horse to lay down etc. Are their stops for water and feed breaks? Also the condition of the trailer, does it have good suspension? Is their room for the horse to lay down? Is it bedded with shavings and rubber mats? Are the horses legs wrapped well? Many long haul horses will stay in the trailer for the entire trip, 48-72 hours with no ill effects in good quality trailers.

How do you make a horse have longer gaits?

try creating an agility course. lay down poles or logs horizontally on the ground and have your horse trot over them. space them in a way that makes the horse have to stretch a little to reach over them. some horses also have shorter legs which you cant do too much about.
