When you buy a DVD-Ram you have to make sure that it is rated for DVD+/-RW, it usually says in on the computer, or on the box itself (if you bought the DVD-Ram separately) Most new DVD-Ram drives have DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-DL, DVD+DL. No. A drive that possesses only CD writing capabilities will not be able to write to a DVD-R or DVD+R. A drive that does not have DVD reading capabilities will also not be able to read data that has been written to them.
Not necessarily. You can have a CD/DVD reading drive that does not write.
The purpose of a DVD drive is to read and write CD's and DVD's. If the drive also has rewriting capability, it can also burn CD's and DVD's.
Read/ write drives allow you to write DVDs. ROMs only read.
8X DVD super multi Double Layer Support reads and write DVDs but cant read or write CDs.. DVD-RAM support, notably, is absent (though it can be unofficially enabled on some drive models), and Apple has never offered a proprietary Blu-Ray drive or supported the format.
Newer DVD drives can read and write both DVD-R and DVD+R discs. An older one may or may not be able to. so you should double-check the drive. Usually a drive will display what is supports on the front of its tray.
A DVD-ROM drive does not have the capability to burn DVDs, only read them.you can reference the article :DvD Drive Can not Write to Writable Discs (Windows 98, ME, XP)http://laptopacadapter.wordpress.com/2010/01/23/dvd-drive-can-not-write-to-writable-discs-windows-98-me-xp/

First Answer:Sadly, you can't.Second Answer:Actually, most disc drives are backwards compatible to the last disc. So, DVD drives can read/write to CD and Blu-ray drives can read/write DVD and CDRs.It does not work the other way around. You can't read/write to a DVD if the drive is marked as a CD drive.
Your drive is probably a CD-R(W)/DVD-ROM drive. These are not capable of writing DVDs, but only reading them.
No. A cd-rom drive cannot play DVD's. A DVD drive can play CDs and DVD's. A cd-rom drive isn't made for DVD's. It's made only for CD's, and it can't write any. It can only read.
