People of Indian descent have some traditions that seem very strange and backward to a modern world, such as arranged marriage and chastity/celibacy until being married. Because of this, being with someone you aren't married to is fairly scandalous and brings dishonour to the family. He isn't quite prepared to abandon his culture and disrespect his parents, so he won't tell them.
