There are three reasons a tornado might not be seen.

  1. Relatively dry air and a lack of dust and debris under a storm can result in a tornado with no condensation funnel or debris cloud to make it visible.
  2. Some tornadoes are shrouded in heavy rain, which obscures them from view.
  3. Tornadoes that occur at night might not be seen simply because it is too dark.
