In America capital punishment is usually reserved for murderers. In that case the victim would be dead and therefore would not be able to decide the capital punishment for the offenders. If you include the families of murdered people as victims you wouldn't want them to decide the fate of a person's life. A person should get the death penalty based on aggravating and mitigating factors and not in whether the victim want's them to be put to death. This puts more emphasis on revenge, which is personal, and less emphasis on retribution, which is more just.

What do you think of capital punishment?

It is not a good thing. Too many people today are being found innocent. And FYI I am a person who's mother was murdered and I still don't feel that her killer should die at the hands of our court system. It stops repeat offendingIn some cases it is good in others it is bad. Some research says it is racist and sexist. Others say it is beneficial. In one way capital punishment is bad because it takes many innocent peoples lives. In other ways its good because it ride our world of people who could potentially hurt innocent victims. The percentage of Caucasian victims vs. African American victims of murders punishable by the death penalty is 15% African American victims of murder and 76% Caucasians. This research is not super recent but recent enough. Should the family of the crime be allowed to decide the punishment of those who commit the crimes?

many people believe that family of a crime..or victims need to be allowed to decide on punishment but unfortunately offenders just like everyone else in society is is protected by the constitution and our amendments. that those who commit a crime has the right for a trial of our peers. and tough so a jury needs to decide on the punishment but its important to remember that victims and families of victims could write victim impact statements which basically are letters that you can read to the offender andf the judge and the jury and these statements can help with the decisions on punshiment...

How many of the 34 states that currently have capital punishment statutes enforce them?

Every state with Capital Punishment enforces it. However it only need be enforced when crime(s) committed warrant such a response. In most states that currently have the death penalty the most common crime committed that warrants death is 1st Degree Murder, or multiple counts of 1st-3rd degree murder. However, as with any judicial system it is entirely up to the court to decide based on the circumstances. Some states have even warranted capital punishment in crimes involving sexual abuse of a minor.

Why is the death penalty okay?

For some people, it's not. For others it is not enough punishment for the bringing about the death of a loved one. Since we are a democracy the majority of the people say that capital punishment is justifiable homicide. Everybody has to decide for themselves. And there is never just a 'black and white' solution. Life is full of many shades of gray.

When does a good man decide to kill?

There is almost a contradiction in terms, in that deciding to kill another human would almost always mean that the man (or woman) is not good. A good man can kill in self defence, if no other option is available. A good man can kill as part of his duty in a just war. Some say that a good man can order or carry out capital punishment, but most advanced societies have banned capital punishment as immoral and unjustified.
