The feeling of being unable to move when one awakens is caused by "sleep paralysis." This is the normal condition of the body while sleeping, that prevents dreamers from getting out of bed and acting out the movements of their dreams. Sometimes the mind begins to wake up before the physical sleep paralysis subsides, resulting in the sensation of being awake but unable to move. Along with the feeling of paralysis might be the sense that a shadowy figure is lurking nearby. More people are becoming aware of sleep paralysis as information about this interesting phenomenon circulates via the internet.
