Goldfish can survive in salty water. I keep tropical and goldfish and use a certain degree of salt to keep the fish in prime condition. It is brilliant as an overall tonic and it also kills a lot of bacteria that can naturally live in non-salt water. After putting salt in my tanks, the fish all perk up and sometimes it even helps them reproduce. It is however, true that they cannot live in a marine environment so you have to watch the salt levels. Never use table salt, you can use marine salt but you have to watch the pH levels. I use manufactured salt with a pH buffer to prevent a rise in pH.
Freshwater Fish can tolerate a very small amount of salt, but generally, they cannot tolerate saltwater because they cannot properly osmoregulate in saltwater. That is, they cannot control the salt content in their bodies in saltwater.
Gold fish are meant for fresh water naturally. A lot of species, like humans, will die if salt water is consumed or inhaled. This is because the salt water actually kills cells by either meiosis or mitosis or something like that. I honestly don't remember. The point is, the salt will kill a lot of cells which will eventually kill the host.
Sometimes, to kill fungus, a small percentage of salt is put into the freshwater aquarium water. The goldfish will generally survive that treatment. They will, however, quickly expire in sea water.
Black mollys, on the other hand are used to 'break in' saltwater tanks. They can survive in both salt and fresh water.
No, goldfish cannot live in saltwater, although some goldfish can tolerate small amounts of salt. There is a therapeutic treatment for scale diseases that involve temporarily increasing the amount of salts.
