Why does sand in your aquarium turn black?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The black is Bacteria build up. This always happens in nature and should be OK provided you keep to the basic rules that follow and also have plants growing in the sand. The basic rules for successfull fishkeeping are as follows. :- 1 inch (2.25cm) of fish needs at least 1 gallon (3.78ltrs) of water. Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water replaced every week. If you follow the above rules, feed the fish the correct diet and keep the container covered and at 75F most tropical fish will do OK. I can guarantee that if you don't keep the preceeding rules that your fish will have constant health problems and will live a considerably shorter life.

What is the recommended size for a salt water tank?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I'm sure others with more experience will expand upon this, the larger the tank the better off you'll be for salt water. Personally, 90gal, 120gal, or even 180 gal would be good. well you can use 20, or 30 thirty to quarentine before adding to a larger tank. You will find most species need at least 55 some only 30, so at least 30 No less than 55 is recommended, 1inch per gallon

What type of filter system is best for a 40 gallon saltwater aquarium?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

there are 2 types of filters for salt water tanks. The most important and must-have filter is called a "protien skimmer" This removes nitraites from your system. Nitrates are basicly wasts' from fish and other organisms. The 2nd type of filter is a hexametaphosphate crystal filter.tis filters and maintains phosphates in your system. Phosphates are chemicals such as heavy metals (iron, alkaline, magnesium, ect...). Any inorganic chemicals are concidered phosphates. Unlike nitraites, phosphates are good for your tank but a specific amounts( alkaline-8.1 Magnesium-1.2 calcium-3.6 iodine-2.5) but too high and it is not good.if you have a reef only tank with no fish you wont have to purchase a hexametaphosphate crystal filter. Instead just add trace chemicals directly into tank

They are red because you can see the colour of the red blood through the thin walls of the gills. The gills carry the oxygenated blood into and around the fish just as your lungs do for you.

How many ltrs of water in a 4x4x2 tank?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The 4x2x2 is the external measurement, so we need to account for the glass.... your glass is probably about 3/4 of an inch thick. This is on 5 sides (not the top, obviously

This means your tank internally (it the empty space you can put water in) is about

3.875 x 2.875 x 2.933 feet

Which is about 14 cubic feet, or about 400 litres of water. Remember that your fish, ornaments, sand, filters etc all take up some of this space, so your 4x2x2 probably holds somewhere between 350 and 390 litres of water when full.

How often do you need to test the ammonia level in an aquarium?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You need to test for ammonia once a week (and all aspects of water quality) for established aquariums (see related question). In newly setup aquariums (up until the tank is cycled), test ammonia (and all aspects of water quality) every other day.

since i set up my tank(18 months ago,i have never tested for ammonia.once your tank has cycled there is no need unless you have a major catastrophe like a large fish or anemone dying.

You should test ammonia for the first 8 weeks of your cycle. After that, there will be enough bacteria in your tank to convert ammonia into nitrite and there will be no need to test unless there are signs of problems.

How long would a salt water fish live in a salt water tank?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This also depends on how good your filtration system is. You can have a huge tank, a crappy filter, and only a few fish, and they will still be stressed and sick from the ammonia and nitrate buildup. They will eventually die. However you could have a relatively small tank, excellent filtration, and a few smaller fish. So it depends on your filter and how big you tank is.

The General Rule is litre = 1cm of fish, 1 inch of fish = 1 gallon

In general, there is no rule of thumb for saltwater aquarium fish. It really depends on your filtration and the design of your aquascaping. If the fish are not stressed and you're water parameters are in check, then you will be able to keep an almost limitless amount of fish in your saltwater aquarium. Now this doesn't mean put 5 yellow tangs in a 10 gallon aquarium. Use common sense and make sure the fish have enough room to swim.
