One avoidable risk in anesthesia is for stomach contents to leave the stomach and regurgatate into the throat and then into the lungs. If the stomach is empty, no aspiration of stomach contents into the lungs can happen. This has nothing to do with post op nausea or vomiting.
Patients are not allowed to eat prior to general anesthesia because there is a substantial risk of the food and fluids in the stomach being regurgitated and ending up in the lungs. This can cause severe pneumonia and can be life threatening. This risk is minimized by having patients not eat for several hours prior to surgery.
The doctors want to make sure your body is clear of everything so they can make everything as easy as possible.
because of the risk of regurgitating food and liquid or aspirating vomitus into the lungs
It is advisable not to eat or drink for at least 5 to 6 hours before any surgery carried out under a general anaesthetic.
Check with your doctor. They often will not do the surgery if you have been instructed not to eat or drink unless it is emergency surgery and you have to have it or you will, you know, die. It would not matter if you NEEDED emergency surgery.
Patients should not eat or drink anything for the eight hours before the scheduled time of surgery.
