If your MR 2 fans come on, then quickly goes off, it could be a precaution, as hot water rises, and what you want in your radiator - is cool water, not rising hot water from your engine, so if you come in with a hot engine, and go out 5 minutes later, you want cold water in radiator, not hot that has rissen from the engine, so the fans come on to cool the water, just incase of above.
You may also find that when you switch on a lap top, the fans come on too, for a short while. ( When you switch off, Heat builds up, warms the air, then all the chips are hot, the air is hot, things get hotter, so the fan comes on to get cold air in, just incase you have only had your computer off for a few minutes )
If you unplug sensor and one or both fans come on.
The engine computer (PCM) operates the fans by opening and closing the ground for the fans. The PCM will command the low speed fan to come on when coolant temp exceeds 221 degrees. The fan should always come on whenever you turn on the A/C no matter the engine temperature. The fan will also operate with the engine off when the engine coolant temp is over 140 degrees. The PCM will ground all 3 engine coolant fan relays when the coolant temp is 235 degrees or the A/C pressure is too high and run the fans on high speed.
the fans are operated by means of a series of relays which are turned on or off by the engine computer. the engine coolant temp sensor that sends its signal to the engine computer is what indirectly turns on the fans. if there is no check engine light for a coolant temp. sensor code, the problem lies in the fans themselves, or the relays and related wiring.
Stuck thermostat Replace coolant fan module if the fans do not come on.
to cool the coolant in the engine
your themostat does not control your fans your fans are controled by coolant temp sensor if they are running all the time the problem is in the coolant temp it not working and ecm is overriding it and alowing the fans to run all the time.
Cooling fan is desgined to come on when coolant reaches 235 degrees Bad temperature sensor?
On the front of the engine, near the rad fans.
3 cooling requirements #1proper coolant mix and amount #2 thermostat #3 electric radiator cooling fans... fans must kick on when engine is hot, if the fans kick on and you have proper coolant level and mix, then it may be a defective thermostat, it's underneath the 3 in diameter engine fitting where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine . If the fans don't kick on could be fans, power to fans , or temp relay telling fans to turn on. Any ex stream outside temps or adverse diving conditions?
Your coolant temperature sensor could be malfunctioning and signaling the fans cool the engine. It is normal, especially, in hot whether for the cooling fans to come on randomly as the engine cools, but if the engine is already cold then there is an issue that needs to be addressed.
If it is a V6, it is located in front between engine and the cooling fans.
the coolant temp sensor( cts) reads the temp of the engine and adjust the fuel air mixture depending on the temp. if its cold out the sensor will adjust for more fuel to ease the start of the engine. ADDITIONAL: The Coolant Temperature Sensor measures the temp of the coolant, not the engine. The sensor controls the thermo fans on/off. depending upon temperature. The actual engine temperature sensor is on top of the engine and does not control the fans. If the fans do not switch on at any temperature, disconnect the 2 wire connector from the sensor (Usually at the bottom of the radiator) If fans start up with connector disconnected, replace the sensor.
