RMS Titanic was 883 feet long. At a speed of 22.5 knots, the ship could not have made a turn considering the distance they were from the iceberg when it was first spotted. The officer in charge also had to order a "Stop" on the engines, then order the men to make the engines go full speed astern. It only took thirty-seven seconds before the ship began to swing portside. According to reports at the time and recreations in movies, the iceberg cut a 300 foot gash along the side, with water in the forepeak, No. 1 and No. 2 hold, boiler rooms No. 5 and 6, and in the mailroom. The ship could have stayed afloat if only 3 compartments flooded--but NOT with 5 flooded.

With sinking a certainty, they estimated they only had an hour to an hour and a half before the ship sunk. At 12.15 the International call of distress CQD was tapped out followed by the Titanic's MGY call letters. There were 1320 passengers and 907 crew, but not enough life vests or life boats. As was the common and morality courtesy of the time, women and children were to go first, but officers did not load the boats to capacity, thinking men's weight would capsize the boats. The waters and air were frigid; hypothermia took most of those who escaped the sinking who were not in life boats. The half-loaded life boats had moved far away because the ship slipping under water would pull the life boats down with it. By the time the women-children's lifeboats returned, most people in the water had frozen to death. Countless others had gone down with the ship, including men who had stayed in the engine room, trying to keep the ship's lights and radio working.

Why could the titanic not turn fast enough?

The Titanic was going at 21 knots at the time and it was extremely cold out, calm seas though. As it got closer to the iceberg they pulled it full reverse (23 Knots back, really it just made the Titanic go faster). After that it smashed into the iceberg and the boiler rooms flooded. How it could have been avoided:Titanic is warned by nearby ships like the CalifornianTitanic slows to half speedCaptain closes watertight doors when iceberg spottedCrew turns the ship directly into the icebergCarpathia is morsed for CQD and SOSLifeboats are launchedOR:The ship could have also made it's way out of it, half speed with 2 compartments flooded and limping it's way to New York.
