D-Day was at Normandy because they were thought to be the best beaches to cross. Also the Germans were expecting attack much further north.
As Britain is an island, they had to cross the English Channel to get to mainland Europe. Later in the war, Allied troops had to cross the River Rhine to get to the heart of Germany.
The invasion of Normandy was like a small slice of Hell. The defended beaches, particularly Omaha, had massive cross-fire from Germans dug into concrete bunkers. These bunkers were extensively bombed by Allied bombers over the previous weeks, not a single bunker was even cracked.
In a way it was beneficial to the Allies. The cross channel conditions were such that the invasion, although expected somewhere, was unlikely to happen in a less than calm sea. But the tidal situation was vital, the landing craft would be hampered by underwater obstacles unless landing at a very low tide: Eisenhower took the chance. The surprise element was crucial to success.

During World War II, the route chosen by the Allies to cross into France and begin liberating the mainland of Europe was the beach-dominated coast of Normandy, France. With this "D-Day" invasion of Normandy achieving success, the Allies then moved deeper into France (thence the rest of Europe) through both central and northern lines-of-advance in France.
Cross Channel happened in 2003.
