The areola.
These are Montgomery glands, also referred to as areolar glands. They are located in the areola area of the nipple. They vary in number and their function is to lubricate the nipple and the areola. The areola is the dark area around the nipple.
Your nipples are surrounded by the areola (the dark pigmented area). The areola contains sebaceous glands (the raised bumps/dots) which secrete a lubricating oil which is probably what's causing the shiny appearance.

In many women, there are small bulges on the areola, which are called Montgomery bodies.
The function of the areola is to protect and lubricate the nipple. It contains sebaceous glands and sweat glands that produce oils and moisture to keep the nipple and surrounding skin supple and hydrated. The dark color of the areola is also thought to aid newborns in finding and latching onto the nipple for breastfeeding.
A nipple is a nipple, simple as that. The sometimes darker // pinker skin around the nipple is called the aureole.
The dark area surrounding the nipple - is called the areola (pronounced ah-ree-oh-lah).
The darkening of the areola generally happens once a woman has had a child. But it may not mean anything at all. Consult your physician.
