Because they were against the programm of the Republican Party. After the election of Lincoln in 1860, they were aware of having lost the majority in the Congress and lest they would be considered as a "tolerated minority" with but little influence or power, they decided to secede.
The amount of "manufacturing" in the United States more than doubled between 1860 and 1900.
That was South Carolina in December 1860 - in direct response to Lincoln's election win (because he would not allow any new slave-states). Six more states had joined them by the time Lincoln was inaugurated in March. And the war started in April, withthe Confederates firing on the US Army garrison on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour.

Republican Abraham Lincoln won the election. He was personally opposed to slavery but promised to abide to the rulings of the US Supreme Court which had ruled in 1859 that slavery was legal.
