God had asked him as a test of faith to sacrifice his son, and Abraham was obeying by faith - knowing God could raise him again - but was not required to carry it out.

Who were Abraham and Isaac in the Bible?
Abraham was the founder of what we call Judaism. He was born 3800 years ago into a world steepen in near-universal idolatry. Based on his own research and contemplation, he concluded that idolatry is to be spurned and we must worship the One God alone; all else is an illusion.
