Alexander didn't want any other civilizations to know who exactly built the sphinx so he destroyed the nose. You might say why the nose? Well, think about current day statues, they are built to represent physically the people who construct them. The Africans (Persians/Egyptians) built the Sphinx, so naturally they modeled the face to look like their own people. Meaning, the nose was most likely very noticeably not Caucasoid, or not looking like any person from where Alexander was from.
