Because America intercepted the Zimmerman Telegram,

which they were kind of walked into by British intelligence,

and due to Submarine warfare sinking US flagged ships, and Wilson's desire to influence the peace.

Unrestricted submarine Warfare, my friend. The Germans used their U-Boats, or submarines, to blockade England. They sank any English ship sailing in or out of English waters. They sank one ship, I forget the name, but it had about 138 American passengers onboard. Just goes to show: One ship gets sunk, we declare war on Germany. A military outpost gets bombed, we declare war on Japan. Two or more of our buildings get attacked, we declare war on the Middle-East.

ANSWER 2: The name of the ship ANSWER 1 is talking about is called Lusitania, a British passenger ship. The attack killed 1,198 people, 128 U.S citizens. President Woodrow Wilson sent a strong protest to Germany after 2 more attacks Germany agreed to stop. But later returned to unrestricted submarine warfare ignoring warning buy President Wilson. Then the action that pushed the U.S. to declare war was the Zimmermann telegram to Mexico by Germany telling then if they ally with Germany, Germany will help Mexico "reconquer" the land they lost to United States. On April 2, 1917, President Wilson asked congress to declare war on Germany.

Well, officially it was because the lucitania was sunk, killing many American passengers. But there was also a letter from the Germans to Mexico promising American land to Mexico if they helped the Germans. Naturally America did not like that.
