After a successful war for independence, the American Colonies needed a new government and decided to unite into one nation. They needed a head of state and they had had their fill of royal monarchs, so they decided to go with an elected president . It turned out to be a good idea- the US Constitution which features an elected president has worked well for over 200 years and has served as an example for many other constitutional republics around the world.
