As the country expanded and the population increased, it became necessary to find faster ways to transport goods from one part of the US to another; it also became important to find faster ways to transport people-- there were businessmen who needed to get to other cities quickly. But what began as business transportation soon was being used by a wide range of people-- journalists, entertainers, even members of law enforcement. (This was the era before the automobile.) Ultimately, railroads became a necessity for almost everyone: trains were more comfortable than the horse-drawn stage coach, and they allowed larger numbers of people to go and visit their relatives, or go sight-seeing, or attend an event in another city. The trains even became a part of politics: candidates frequently arranged their schedule so they could get off, give a speech, and then get on the next train to go to another city.
