The Japanese attacked the US Naval Fleet and Army Air Base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7th, 1941 without provocation by the USA.

The US Congress declared war on Japan the next day. The Americans gave up their isolationist viewpoints that day.

They were further incensed when Adolf Hitler declared war against the US. They would no longer hold on to the isolationist viewpoint when their country had been threatened by two different nations.

France was one of the countries that Germany invaded in 1914, so it was obviously the first, followed by Great Britain which had a treaty with Belgium and with France. The US did not sent troops until 1917, after public and political opinion turned against the standing policy of isolationism.
